All of the animals posted on our site have been temperament tested. While not all are in the immediate area, once we have processed and approved your application, we will move the dog to our adoptive area for you to meet, greet and hopefully adopt. Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant.

|
BlackJack is one amazing, loving dog that enjoys being with his people all of the time! His coat is so black that it almost looks blue at times. He is tall but not overly muscular. He is an active dog, and would love being the second or third dog in the house. He will tire another dog out for sure! He seems to have the temperament of a Lab. He does not stray far from his humans, and is learning to walk on a leash. He has never attempted to jump our 4 foot fence. He is very playful, still in puppyhood, and will grab shoes and socks, and kid's toys-we are working on the command "Leave it!" a lot these days! He is housebroken, and will stand right next your door and whine if he needs to go outside. If you ignore him, the whine will turn into a quiet bark, sort of telling you he means business! Sometimes if he wants your attention, he will talk to you with a quiet growl and howl while his tail wags frantically. If you don't give him some attention, he will nudge you with that extra long nose. You actually can't ignore him then, because he has the deepest soulful eyes that look at you saying, "I want to sit in your lap and pretend I am a Chihuahua". If you sit on the floor he will lick you clean, and then plop in your lap.
Jack's start to life was not great. He was adopted by a great lady as a puppy, but fell out of the back of a truck and damaged his hip. She had corrective surgery done, which also required 3 months of consistent physical therapy afterwards. This included walking, stretching, and swimming. At that same point of time, she was diagnosed with cancer and had to surrender him to a shelter. As you can figure, no follow-up measures were done, and he has a hip which doesn't support his weight all of the time. After consulting with an orthopedic surgeon, we know the only way to give Jack good quality of life is to provide hip replacement once his growth plates are done growing, and he has done enough walking and stretching to build up his muscles to support the hip after surgery. His surgery will most likely occur in late April or early May. This surgery will take place in Ellicott City, MD. Recovery should be quick, and is anticipated to restore his walking to normal. He will need follow up exercising and perhaps some physical therapy, just to ensure the best possible outcome from the surgery. Our rescue will cover the cost of the surgery, estimated to be around $5,000.
BlackJack is fine staying with his foster through the surgery and recovery. However, he is available for adoption in the event the perfect adopter is looking for a pup like Jack, and is up for the bonding experience that will happen as you nurture him through his recovery.
He has met the cat and is curious, but because the cat doesn't like dogs, she hisses at him which makes him want to play and chase her. A dog savvy cat may be fine with him, but cats that are not comfortable with dogs, might not be a good match with him. Jack has been fine with children he has met, but doesn't realize his own force as he wiggles to greet them. Children under 7 should be supervised with him only to prevent him from knocking them down, and cleaning their face, ears and perhaps even their tonsils! He will also want to play with them and chase them if they run, which could also land them on the ground if he is not supervised. To Jack, it is just another way to have some fun with his humans-big or small! If you are up for a rewarding challenge of helping a dog be the very best dog he can be, consider applying for BlackJack!
